The story of the series revolves around the family of a Protestant minister who lives in Glenoak, California (This is a fictional town) who is the Reverend at the Glenoak Community Church.
The main characters in the show are the Reverend Eric Camden (Stephen Collins), his better half Annie Camden (Catherine Hicks), and the seven children of the couple Matt (Barry Watson), Lucy (Beverley Mitchell), Simon (David Gallagher), Mary (Jessica Biel), Ruthie (Mackenzie Rosman) and the twins David (Lorenzo Brino) and Sam (Nikolas Brino).

Actually earlier there were only 5 children in the family and the twins are born later in the third season of the show. In the course of the show Mary, Matt and Simon leave home, as Simon has college to attend, and Matt gets married after becoming a doctor. Still the home does not seem vacant as a lot of guests keep dropping by and then there is Lucy who along with Kevin, her husband and Savannah, her daughter resides in a house that is in the rear of the parsonage, the Camdens residence.
Jessica Biel’s role was written off slowly out of the series because of her sexy image that was not gelling well with the character show. She did, however, make some occasional appearances. The other girl of family, Lucy appeared in every episode of all 11 seasons of the show.
Every episode of the show has some issue of social consequence that is dealt by the family in some sort of way. The plot can relate to alcoholism, various sorts of addictions, etc. Moral preaching aside, the story arcs are quite long and expansive. It is this blend of socially relevant themes and the family bonding ingrained that the show has gained such widespread popularity and fame. And this is also one of the reasons that show has managed to have such a long and successful run.
